Marie Palmer, a devoted embroidery and textile enthusiast for the past ten years, has found joy in the art of crafting. Her pieces take a long time to complete which allow for plenty of contemplation. Through her works, primarily created using embroidery and mixed media, she creates a visual narrative that delves into the depth of maternal love, the dualities of nurturing and sacrifice, and the ways in which the natural world reflects and informs our inner landscapes. Gratefully accepted into the warm community of the LA Crafts Guild and the International Society for Embroidered Work, Marie appreciates the encouragement and learning opportunities these memberships offer. She has been mentioned in local publications such as the Acadiana Advertiser and Lifestyle Lafayette and her work was exhibited at Acadiana Center for the Arts in 2023.
Outside of her artistic pursuits, Marie cherishes the roles of being a mother of three and a supportive partner to her husband, James Palmer, as co-owners of Pelican Engineering, an electronics design and manufacturing firm. Currently pursuing an MBA at UL Lafayette, Marie sees each step as a chance for personal and professional growth, grateful for the ongoing journey in both art and life.
Who makes up your art circle?
I am so thankful to live in Lafayette which has such a rich tradition of growing and supporting new artists. I have always felt welcome at the events I have attended. My friends and family provide so much valuable feedback on projects as I am working on them. Cayla Zeek and my son, Luke are my most reliable constructive critics. Many projects would be stuck without them.
How do you expand your art circle?
I have expanded my art circle by attending gallery openings and Basin Crit nights. I try to connect personally with other local artists and be supportive of their work anytime I can.
What value do you see in having a creative community?
Creating textile art is a mostly solitary venture, so getting out and connecting with other artists and the community is vital to my creative practice. This was highlighted for me during Covid years when most events were cancelled. Our creative community is absolutely necessary!
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
I try to bring a unique contribution to the community by infusing a sense of beauty, craftsmanship, and introspection into the local fabric. My goal is to create pieces that resonate with authentic heartfelt expression while also supporting my fellow artists.
Our weekly Art Circle series profiles artists throughout the community and is sponsored in part by Lafayette Visitor Enterprise Fund managed by Lafayette Travel
