Introducing Roz LeCompte

Roz LeCompte is a self-taught artist from South Louisiana. She has cycled through many mediums and styles since her public visual art debut in the late 1990’s. She feels most comfortable in the abstract space relentlessly exploring the idea of how chaos and order contrast one another using colors and shapes. This sometimes boundary-less dance produces an underlying current present in all her works. She has recently participated in group exhibitions at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Basin Arts Gallery, Acadiana Center for the Arts, and the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, Louisiana, and has been featured in British Vogue Magazine.

Who makes up your art circle?
I’ve taken a 20 year hiatus from painting to build my jewelry business, so the circles have intertwined over the years and include old friends I initially explored painting with from my early 20’s and new ones from all over the world, thanks to selling our drum cymbal jewels at the market on Frenchmen Street in New Orleans.
How do you expand your art circle?
I try to attend as many local art events as I can and engage with other artists on social media.

What value do you see in having a creative community?
Community is an important piece of our Cajun heritage, so  immersing myself in the art community whenever possible feels like a natural extension of who I am.  I especially love  witnessing everyone’s interpretations of my art at public showings..it’s fascinating how different they can be from my initial intentions.
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
I am not a classically trained artist , but am always trying to weave in my roots and surroundings in my work however I can, and hope to represent my heritage more as I grow as an artist.  I also love bringing people together / being involved in anything featuring art and music : my two favorite things!
Our weekly Art Circle series profiles artists throughout the community and is sponsored in part by Lafayette Visitor Enterprise Fund managed by Lafayette Travel
