Introducing Poet Jenna Harvey

Jenna Harvey is a local poet and this week’s featured artist in our Art Circle! Each week Basin Arts is featuring a different artist in the hopes that readers will get to know more about the diverse range of artists in our community.
We asked Jenna some questions to learn more about her creative process, her source of inspiration, and her community. And be sure to check out Jenna’s spoken work poetry video below.

What is creativity to you? Where does it come from?
Creativity to me is using your talents and gifts to create something, whether it fits your personality or helps out others around you. It may come from something inspiring or just out of curiosity.
How long have you been writing your poetry?
I have always loved writing for as long as I can remember but to focus on pure poetry and finding a passion for it, I’ve started in 2018.
Do you perform it often? How often?
I perform when I can seize the opportunity or for special occasions, but with COVID and me not being all that known, it’s a little more challenging.
What got you into the craft?
I was going through a rough time in my life and poetry was like the light at the end of a dark tunnel. It was refreshing and helped me push through my toughest times. And I was inspired to be that light for someone else.
Who are people that inspire you the most?
Jackie Hill Perry, Janette Watson (Janette…ikz), Jasmine Sims are my inspirations.
Who’s style would you say you imitate the most in your writing or performing?
I’m not really sure who’s style of writing I imitate. I like to try different things and allow God to move through me.
Why do you do your work?
I love poetry and do it to encourage others. Words are very effective in one’s life and encouragement goes a long way. I wish to pull people out and possibly draw them closer to God like someone did for me. When no one can express their words, I want to be a voice for them. Relating to their feelings, while at the same time drawing out the best in them.
Do you have any up coming poems or products for your fans?
I do have a product coming soon. My first book to be precise, but that will be announced soon through my Instagram account @jen.rossyion
What would you say to someone who is beginning to take an interest in writing?
I would tell them not to despise little beginnings (Zec. 4:10). It’s not impossible to achieve. Even I have my doubts, but you’ll never know if you don’t try. Besides, some people may receive your words better than others.
What value do you see in having a creative community?
The value in a creative community is having other people around you see your art and help you perfect it. They can help you see it from a different perspective and give you different insights and new outlets to express your creativity.
How does your artistic approach contribute to your community?
I would like to think that my art can reach back to the community in regards of being the voice that no one else thinks others can hear. Just to encourage others that they aren’t alone and their dreams aren’t impossible. Even when they feel circumstances impossible, they can get through it.
