The Emerging Artists Mentorship program is focussed on offering guidance and mentorship to a selected group of emerging artists within the Lafayette community.

“We have established this body of work as a public space of refuge—one where the audience must dispose of their social anxieties in order to feel truly happy in its embrace. This is achieved through a fusion of common household objects, soft fabric, atmospheric musical compositions, bold lighting fixtures, and choreographed movements of the human body. The resulting work fixates on the uncomfortable joy of pursuing safety, with brightly-colored and eccentric forms paired with familiar objects to create an uneasy harmony. This amalgamation of multiple media exudes a feeling of contentment for the audience to enjoy.

All four of us censor much of our individual personalities when in public settings. We fear being ridiculed for failing to adhere to established social expectations, causing us to sacrifice our abilities to express ourselves. The risk of being hurt when any one of us puts our individuality on full display can be paralyzing. It is through the creation of art, however, that we feel safe enough to be intentionally vulnerable. With this body of work, we give the audience the freedom to feel the same way—the freedom to just play.”
