Improv Inspiration

Over the weekend, Basin Arts played host to an exciting September Artwalk… Sideways Hot Tub: Super Motivation Galore Saturday September 9, 2017 At Basin Arts, we typically change the work in our art gallery monthly, but every now and again we have a show that will stay for two months. Because we are focused on creative collaboration and multi-disciplinary artistic investigation, there is a challenge to see how the visual art can find ways to be reinterpreted or perform in a unique way for the second month in the gallery. For September Artwalk, that is how Sideways Hot Tub: Super Motivation...

Meet Gina Hanchey

Meet Gina Hanchey

Meet Choreographer, Gina Hanchey. Gina’s dance is inspired by the choreography of a restaurant…from kitchen to dining room. From kitchen prep to meal presentation, any given night in a restaurant is intricately choreographed with every detail carefully planned out; culminating in a sensory event that still only lasts but a moment. The same can be said about preparing for a dance from rehearsal to the stage. Both the chef and the choreographer share this commitment to a detailed creative process that is ultimately fleeting. After the food has been eaten and the dance has been watched, all that is left is the...

Meet Paige Krause

Meet Paige Krause

Meet Choreographer, Paige Krause. Paige’s dance looks at how the five senses inspire both food and movement. Choreographer, Paige Krause will premiere her new dance work, sea of senses, this week at STIR. Her cast includes dancers, Jasmine Bertrand, Whitney Willis Hebert, and Leah Twilley, featuring music by Kind Cousin, illustrations by Kelli Foret Richard, projection design by Jonathan Armentor, and costumes by Chad Trahan. She is collaborating with Chef Manny Augello of Bread and Circus.     Read along to find out more about Paige’s process of developing ‘sea of senses’ with her diverse roster of collaborators! Meet Clare Cook

Meet Clare Cook

Meet Choreographer, Clare Cook Clare will premiere her latest dance theater piece, Ripe Figs Won’t Keep, at STIR.  Clare Cook watches the fig tree in her backyard like some people watch storms. She imagines the leaves as citizens of a community, the branches; living roads leading to family groups, the roots; ancestors who mine the earth for nourishment passing it silently up the trunk. And the fig herself? Woman. The seasons of life put on a show for her. A story of how we exist to support, challenge and share seasons with our community is whispered year after year. We...

Meet Sharon Leahy

Meet Sharon Leahy

Meet Choreographer, Sharon Leahy Sharon has created an original dance film for STIR titled Ground Fine. Ground Fine is all about our rocky relationships with food. Human nature leads us to crave the foods that we know we shouldn’t have. Ground Fine zooms in on those weaker moments in life with playfulness and physicality asking “why must I love what hurts me so?” (also the name of the original song written by Rick Good to be the soundtrack for the film). The film was shot on location at the Camelia House in Lafayette, La in an authentic 1950s style kitchen. Dancers in...

Meet Frances Barker

Meet Frances Barker

Meet Choreographer, Frances Barker. Frances is developing a new work for STIR all about dining alone. Frances says… “Growing up in Southern Louisiana my whole life; food is communal. A Sunday dinner is never your average Sunday dinner, food is always in abundance. It’s where we gather to share, laugh, argue and socialize with friends and family. I wanted to do the reverse and put a microscope on dining alone. I do it on occasion and find it relaxing. Like public speaking, eating alone can be a terrifying experience. All those eyes zoning in on you, curious as to why...
